BLACKTIES
ILBIJERRI Theatre Company & Te Rēhia Theatre Company’s
BLACK TIES
BY ALBERT BELZ, JOHN HARVEY, KAMARA BELL-WYKES AND TAINUI TUKIWAHO
Two families, two cultures... too much!
When Māori corporate hotshot Hera and Aboriginal consultancy entrepreneur Bila locked eyes at a Cultural Awareness session, it was love at first sight. Ambitious, career focused, and driven by their need for control, Bila and Hera have their perfect future all mapped out. But there is one thing they can’t control, their families...
BLACK TIES is a ground-breaking collaboration and cultural exchange between leading first people theatre companies. BLACK TIES will be a 10-hand (5 New Zealanders, 5 Australians) plus band musical comedy of scale and brown drama never seen before. It is a cheeky, irreverent and frankly ridiculous theatre experience that is unashamedly by our people and for our people. Emerging out of long standing First Nations Exchange initiatives, the development of BLACK TIES began in earnest as part of Asia TOPA Creative labs in May 2018.
This closed play reading follows a five day creative development of our first draft working with primarily Māori performers.
