The Magic Flute is a very famous opera by Mozart. However, this version of The Magic Flute is not a normal opera!

In this version, the story is told by beautiful hand-drawn animations which are projected onto a very big screen in front of which live opera singers interact and become part of. It has to be seen to be believed. Giant spiders, elephants splashing around in cocktail glasses, flying flutes, dancing bells and a really big monster…

It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the story of The Magic Flute.  We will explain the story in NZSL video (coming soon). The show starts with a prince battling a dragon. On his travels he encounters magical beasts, a bird-man, a bird-woman, trials by fire and water and the wicked Queen of the Night. It might seem like just another fairytale of a prince finding his princess, but it’s also about truth, love and judgement and good and evil.

The story is told through the animation and the words in the songs (or arias as they are called in opera). The words in the songs (arias) are written in English on a screen above the stage as the arias are sung in German by the opera singers. The show also features the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra who play the music. There is a hearing-aid loop in the theatre – please let us know if you would like a seat with a hearing-aid loop.
