WHĀNUI

Whānui is a creative, communal adventure: a collection of participatory arts projects in which an amazing mix of people who call Auckland home create, join in with and experience artworks across the region in the many spaces and places that form our neighbourhoods – street corners, shopping centres, parks and marae.

This year Whānui will be further enriched by Māori language through Toitū Te Reo, which expresses Auckland Arts Festival's commitment to te reo Māori.

Led by our diverse communities, in collaboration with established artists, the FREE, interactive, get-in-amongst-it events popping up around Tāmaki Makaurau in 2019 will each play a part in celebrating and normalising te reo Māori so it is seen, heard and felt

Celebrating cultural and intergenerational ties, this cross-cultural collaboration brings te reo Māori to Chinese and Sāmoan communities through their native mother tongues. Participants have learned, engaged, and collaborated to share and understand their pepeha – a way of introducing yourself in Māori, and this event is a culmination of their four week journey learning at Te Whare o Matariki in Howick and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa in Māngere. 

Short film vignettes will also be presented as part of the project throughout Auckland Arts Festival at participating Auckland City Libraries. Come and witness the results of their experience at this family friendly intercultural arts event.

Tihei Mauri Ora! Ngā Herenga Waka, meaning “the binding of canoes,” is a celebration of all ages and cultures and a symbol of the people residing in Mount Roskill. 
The live carving by Ngati Whatua carvers Te Aroha Witika, and Len Phillips of a large community pou will be influenced by kōrero, wānanga, tuhituhi and other artistic forms in workshops led by Mad Ave and Roskill Together. These workshops are held throughout the community and will help influence the design of the pou. Come and see the live creation and carving or take part in one of the workshops to help create a pou that symbolises the connecting of diverse cultures residing in Puketāpapa/Mount Roskill.

Elders and children of Waitākere share pūrākau of their lives in Waitākere through the magic of song, storytelling and theatre. Devised with the community in collaboration with Te Pou Theatre, this fascination-filled theatrical experience is drawn from a shared learning process undertaken on the beautiful whenua where we live, work and play, and your whole whānau is invited to join in!
